Chennai. South cinema superstar Thalapathy Vijay is now making waves in the political field as well. His party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has performed brilliantly in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026. Leaving behind the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Vijay’s party has grabbed everyone’s attention. Vijay himself won Perambur and Tiruchirappalli seats. This time is proving to be very special for Vijay, who has turned from cinema to politics. On one hand, his last film ‘Jan Nayakan’ is going to be released soon, on the other hand, he is emerging as a ‘Jan Nayak’ in politics. The question is when and why did Vijay enter politics? Many big stars of South Indian cinema have been active in politics. Vijay also followed the same path and formally announced his party TVK on 2 February 2024. He was showing interest in politics since the Covid pandemic. In such a situation, seeing the right time in the year 2024, he formed a party and decided to contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in the year 2026. On the same day he also announced his retirement from the film industry.
Vijay had also released a manifesto in April 2026, in which many big promises were made. He said that the female head of the household will be given financial assistance of Rs 2,500 every month and 6 free gas cylinders in a year. At the same time, 8 grams of gold and silk sarees will also be given for the marriage of poor daughters. Vijay also has a lot to offer for the unemployed youth. He had also announced a monthly allowance of Rs 4,000 to graduates and Rs 2,500 to diploma students. Also announced loans without guarantee, loan waiver of small farmers and 200 units of free electricity to every household.
Vijay had said that politics is not a hobby for him, but a ‘sacred service’. The beginning of the political journey was not easy for Vijay, at the same time his personal life was also turbulent. His wife Sangeetha Sornalingam filed for divorce. This rift in the 27 year old marriage shocked the entire Tamil Nadu. Sangeeta also accused Vijay of extra marital affair. She believes that she was trying to improve the relationship for the last two years, but was not successful.
Both of them got married in the year 1999. The couple has two children, son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Sasha. Vijay started his film journey as a child artist in the year 1984. His first film ‘Vetri’ was directed by his father S.A. It was directed by Chandrashekhar. He worked as a child artist in several films and debuted as a lead actor in 1992 with ‘Naalaiya Theerpu’. The 1996 film ‘Poove Unakkaga’ established him as a romantic hero.
After this he gave dozens of hit films and became famous as Thalapathy. At the time of nomination, Vijay filed an affidavit of his assets. According to him, the total assets are Rs 404.58 crore. He owns 10 houses. There are also money in personal bank accounts, children’s accounts and wife’s account. Vijay also has many luxury cars.
