Washington. US President Donald Trump said a gunman was quickly subdued by Secret Service agents after shots were fired near the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. The gunman, armed with multiple weapons, was attacking a security checkpoint. He described the incident as very sudden and praised the action of the security agents. “I was completely surprised that something happened. The first lady and I heard a sound and I thought it was a tray falling down and it was a very loud sound and coming from quite a distance,” Trump said at a press conference at the White House after being safely evacuated from the Washington Hilton. Trump said that the charge was caught by some very brave members of the Secret Service and they acted very quickly, one agent was shot but was unharmed.
The US President said the attacker attacked from a distance of 50 yards but was stopped before reaching the ballroom. The room was very, very safe. Trump emphasized that the accused did not enter the main event space.
It is being told that the accused gunman is a resident of California. He was going through a security checkpoint and was caught. He could not go inside the big ballroom of the hotel. Top administration officials including President Trump and hundreds of journalists had gathered in the ballroom.
The President has confirmed that a Secret Service officer was shot but survived. He said, “One officer was shot, but he survived because he was wearing a very good bulletproof vest. The vest did its job. The officer was in very good condition and in very good spirits.”
Trump repeatedly praised the actions taken by security agents, saying, “They worked very quickly, I was very impressed with the Secret Service. Otherwise I would have complained.”
Describing the moment of the shooting, he said that the events happened within a matter of seconds. He said, “I was watching what was happening. Maybe it should have happened more quickly. The first lady reacted immediately and both of them were quickly evacuated.”
Trump said he wanted to continue the dinner despite the interruption. He said, “I tried very hard to stay, but also recognized that it was necessary to evacuate people as per security protocols. The event will happen again within 30 days.”
Guests at the Washington Hilton heard five or six loud bangs. The accused was taken into custody near the screening area. The Secret Service said the incident occurred near the main magnetometer screening area, with everyone safe.
Trump said investigators were looking into whether the attacker acted alone. The US President called the accused a sick person.
Reflecting on the threat to the presidency, Trump said, “This is a dangerous profession. These threats will not change my approach to public life.”
He also appealed for unity, saying, “We need to resolve our differences, Republican, Democrat and Independent. Despite the disruption, this gathering represents a shared national moment for the time being.”
The Washington Hilton, where the dinner traditionally takes place, has long been associated with presidential security concerns. An attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagan was also made at this place in 1981. It is a reminder of the persistent dangers surrounding American political leadership.
