There may be millions of asteroids in space. About 16,000 asteroids are believed to be near Earth. Scientists consider these to be fragments of planets. They continuously revolve around the Sun in the solar system. Their structure is also similar to that of planets. However, when asteroids come close to Earth they can be dangerous. There is a possibility of a collision. That’s why NASA keeps an eye on them.
NASA has issued an alert for three big asteroids today. It is expected that these rocky bodies will come close to the Earth today. According to NASA’s JPL, the name of the first asteroid is Asteroid 2026 BT, which is 19 feet wide. NASA has compared its size to a car. This asteroid was discovered in 2026. It is expected to pass close to Earth on January 19. When it will be closest to Earth, the distance between Earth and the asteroid will be just 1.1 million kilometers. NASA says that any asteroid coming within a radius of 7.5 million kilometers from the Earth can be dangerous. According to this, this asteroid is coming very close.
Apart from this, two more asteroids are coming close to the Earth today. The name of the second asteroid is Asteroid 2026 BH1, which is 36 feet big. It is approximately the size of a bus. The third asteroid is 2026 BL. Its size is 12 feet. It is expected to pass through a distance of 1.18 million kilometres. However, NASA has not released any information about any of these asteroids hitting the Earth.
A collision between an asteroid and Earth is considered a very rare event. But its possibility cannot be ruled out. Because, asteroids are quite small compared to the size of the planet. In such a situation, Earth’s gravity can easily pull them towards itself. According to the National Science Foundation, Earth’s gravity is so powerful that it can pull any object towards itself at a speed of 9.8 meters per second.
