Anil Kapoor on Alpha: Anil Kapoor, who has played many ‘Alpha’ characters in his illustrious film career, is extremely happy that Bollywood has finally made a fun, popcorn action entertainer like ‘Alpha’, which puts two actresses like Alia Bhatt and Sharvari at the center of an action genre which till now has been considered primarily the domain of male heroes.
Anil Kapoor’s character in ‘Alpha’ has been kept completely confidential at present so that the important secrets of the film’s story remain safe. Talking about this, Anil says, “For a long time, we have seen cinema through certain fixed labels – male lead, female lead, hero, heroine. But now the audience has changed and the way of storytelling has also evolved. The most exciting thing about Alpha is that this film challenges these old definitions.”
He further says, being ‘Alpha’ has never been about gender. It’s about presence, conviction, courage and the ability to drive the story forward. That’s what today’s audience connects with – the main character’s energy, not a category or label.”
Anil Kapoor is hopeful that ‘Alpha’ will be liked by the audience because today people want to see something new and different in the theatres, and by handing over the helm of a big action film to two girls, ‘Alpha’ is going to give that experience in full measure.
He says, “As a father, I have been privileged to see both my daughters support stories and films that break boundaries and challenge conventional thinking. They have always believed in expanding the scope of possibilities for women on screen. I know they are also excited for Alpha because such films have the power to open a completely new chapter in action cinema.”
Anil further adds, “I hope Alpha will bring about a sea change in the way we look at leadership and heroism on screen. Instead of asking whether a character is a male lead or a female lead, perhaps it is time we just ask – ‘Who is Alpha?’ This is a powerful and necessary reimagining of Indian cinema and I am proud to be a part of a film that embraces this vision.”
In the end he says, “The future of cinema does not lie in who gets the chance to lead. The real future lies in eliminating the need to define leadership on the basis of gender.”
Bobby Deol will be seen in the role of villain in ‘Alpha’ produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shiv Rawail. ‘Alpha’ will be released in theaters worldwide on July 3.
