Chamoli, 5 November (). The women of women self-help groups are running their livelihood by taking advantage of the public welfare schemes run by the government, not only have they earned good profits but have also improved their economic condition.
Women of Chamoli, the border district of Uttarakhand, are becoming self-reliant by taking advantage of the schemes run by the government under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRML). While the women of the group are earning thousands of rupees by selling Pahari products, the women are earning well through the traditional sweets Arase and Rotne. Common people are readily buying these products and women are also being praised.
Women say that these government run schemes have proved to be a boon for them. Today she is earning well through women’s self-help group and the financial condition of her family has also improved.
Beneficiary Kanta Rawat says that under the National Livelihood Mission, she is marketing the hill products through outlets and is also earning good profits. Her husband is also helping her in this work. People are eagerly taking the mountain products.
Beneficiary Kanta Rawat, while talking to , said that I have been associated with Nanda Devi Group for three years and am running NRML. I collect products from the village, clean them and pack them and make many products myself. He said that the government is making efforts to make women self-reliant. Earlier, women were not aware that there was no group. When women’s groups have been formed in the village, they are taking training to earn their livelihood. Women are working in sewing-weaving and dairy sectors. I express my gratitude to the government for these schemes.
The beneficiary’s husband Mahipal Singh Rawat told that earlier he used to work in the private sector in Dehradun. One had to face many problems while staying away from home. The family members said that they will stay at home and run the women’s group’s shop. After this I came home and joined the group and am taking care of the family.
