Due to the slowing down of the monsoon in the country, its progress has slowed down. According to weather forecasting agency ‘Skymet’, monsoon has remained almost stable on the west coast since June 8, due to which it may take another 7 to 8 days to reach Mumbai. The main reason for this is believed to be the lack of development of any strong low pressure area (depression) in the Bay of Bengal. Due to this slow movement of monsoon, so far only 103 districts out of total 723 districts of the country have recorded normal rainfall.
Weather condition in the states: relief at some places and disaster at others
Rajasthan: ‘Yellow alert’ for dust storm and rain has been issued today in 23 districts of the state including Jaipur, Bharatpur and Kota. During the last 24 hours, about 2 inches of rain has been recorded in 10 districts of the state including Jhunjhunu.
Bihar: There is an alert of heavy rain in 26 districts of the state including Bhagalpur, Purnia and Champaran today. However, on Tuesday, the mercury crossed 40 degrees Celsius in 7 districts including the capital Patna.
Madhya Pradesh: The effect of rain along with thunderstorm will be seen in 8 districts including Raisen, Chhindwara, Gwalior and Sagar today.
Delhi-NCR: Due to rain and strong winds in the National Capital Region on Tuesday, the maximum temperature dropped by 6°C below normal, making it the coldest day recorded so far in the month of June.
Weather forecast for the next two days (18th and 19th June)
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), after hitting Kerala on June 4, monsoon has so far reached 19 states. The weather of the country in the next two days will be like this:
June 18: There is a possibility of heavy rain in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim and northeastern states (Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh). During this period, winds can blow at a speed of 50-70 km/hour in Bihar. Apart from this, strong winds at a speed of 40-60 km/hour along with thunderstorms and rain are expected in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
June 19: Heavy rains will continue in Sikkim, North Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya. There is a possibility of strong thunderstorm along with rain in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh also.
Will pick up speed as jet stream weakens
Meteorologists say that extremely strong winds blowing in the upper layers of the atmosphere, called jet streams, are currently affecting the monsoon. As soon as the current pattern of the jet stream weakens, the monsoon winds will become active once again. According to the Meteorological Department, favorable conditions are being created for the advance of monsoon into the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh in the next 4 to 5 days.
