In Vastu Shastra, broom is not only considered a means of cleaning, but it is also considered a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. This is the reason why some special rules related to the use and maintenance of broom have been mentioned, following which, happiness, prosperity and positive energy is maintained in the house. According to Vastu, cleaning the house should always start from the main entrance and gradually move towards the interiors of the house. It is believed that positive energy enters from the main door, hence starting cleaning from there is considered auspicious. On the contrary, sweeping the house from inside to outside is not considered appropriate, as it takes away the positive energy and prosperity of the house.
Morning time is considered the most suitable time for sweeping. Cleaning done especially in Brahma Muhurta is considered helpful in maintaining purity and positive environment in the house. It is advisable to avoid sweeping after sunset. If for some reason cleaning has to be done in the evening, household garbage should not be thrown out at that time. It is believed that this may increase financial losses and money related problems.
Keeping the garbage stored in the house for a long time after cleaning is also not considered auspicious. Garbage should be taken out timely, as dirt and clutter promote negativity. Vastu Shastra also gives special emphasis on respecting the broom. The broom should never be stepped on nor should it be kept standing in an open place. It should always be kept at a place where it cannot be easily seen by outsiders. With this, the positive energy and prosperity of the house remains safe.
Saturday is considered auspicious to start using a new broom. It is believed that bringing a new broom home and using it on this day increases financial stability and happiness and prosperity. Although these beliefs are based on religious and traditional beliefs, their basic objective is to maintain cleanliness, discipline and positive environment in the home, which are important for the happy life of any family.
