Kolkata . After SIR in West Bengal, the final voter list was released on Sunday. After this, in view of the possibility of tension, the Bengal government declared four districts as highly sensitive. Also, four senior IPS officers have been appointed to monitor law and order in these areas.
Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia and Cooch Behar districts have been declared sensitive. These four districts share international border with Bangladesh. Cooch Behar and Malda are located in northern Bengal, while Murshidabad and Nadia are in southern Bengal. Malda and Murshidabad are minority dominated districts and sporadic tensions have been seen here in the past also. According to official sources, all four officers assumed their respective duties at 2 pm on Saturday. The charge of Malda district has been handed over to Additional Director General (Anti-Terrorist Force) Ajay Nand. They will be assisted by one officer each from the state anti-terrorism force and Malda district police.
Deputy Inspector General of Coastal Security Sunil Kumar Yadav has been entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring Cooch Behar district. One officer each from the State Rapid Action Force (RPF) and Cooch Behar District Police will assist them.
Headquarters Deputy Inspector General Rashid Munir Khan will monitor the security arrangements in Murshidabad district. They will be assisted by two personnel of the Counter-Insurgency Force and an officer of Murshidabad District Police.
Inspector General of Traffic Gaurav Sharma has been given charge of Nadia district and will be assisted by two officers of Nadia district police.
The first batch of 240 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) started reaching West Bengal from Friday. Under the first phase of security arrangements, these forces are to be deployed from March 1.
The initial deployment will include 110 companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 55 companies of Border Security Force (BSF), 21 companies of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), 27 companies of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and 27 companies of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
CAPF deployment has started even before the formal announcement of polling dates and implementation of the Model Code of Conduct. The second batch of 240 other CAPF companies is to be deployed from March 10, which will further strengthen the security system in the state.
