Angered by China’s rare minerals, US President Donald Trump has announced to impose 100 percent tariff on Beijing. China has now warned that if the US goes ahead with its plan to impose additional tariffs on Beijing’s goods, it will take appropriate measures to protect its interests. This has increased the tension between the world’s two largest economies.
“America must immediately correct its wrong practices”
According to a Reuters report, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said regarding the tariffs that the US should immediately correct its wrong practices. He said that any action should be based on equality, respect and mutual benefit.
Total tariff on China increased to 130 percent
The US President said that new tariffs on China and US controls on critical software will take effect from November 1, 2025. Now, a total tariff of 130 percent will be imposed on Chinese imports into the US. The US President had said that 100 percent of the tariffs would remain in place, although the time frame could change. Trump was asked if he still planned to impose 100% tariffs on China on November 1. Trump replied, “Yeah…that’s the situation right now. Let’s see what happens.”
Tariffs will worsen relations: China
China has tightened export controls on rare earth minerals needed to make high-tech products. China processes about 90% of the world’s rare earth minerals, which are used in everything from smartphones to solar panels. Beijing has imposed controls on these substances at a time when trade talks between China and the US are ongoing and no final decision has been reached. China’s Commerce Ministry has accused the US of abusing export control measures against China. China has said that threats to increase tariffs will worsen relations with China instead of improving them.
