Today is the last day of the financial year—31 March. So, if you are wondering what will be open and what will be closed today, here is the information you need. Today is Mahavir Jayanti, which is celebrated as a public holiday. However, since it is the last day of the financial year, some financial institutions will continue to function. Trading in Indian stock markets will be completely closed on March 31. On this day, trading will remain suspended not only in the main stock market segment but also in the equity, derivatives and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segments.

What will remain closed on NSE and BSE?
> Buying and selling of equity shares will remain suspended.
> Trading in Futures and Options (F&O) will remain suspended.
> There will be no settlement processes (clearing of funds and shares).

In other words, investors will not be able to make any new trades on March 31. Thereafter, the markets will reopen on April 1, 2026 (Wednesday). Trading to resume on April 1; However, it will be observed as a “Settlement Holiday”. On this day, although you will be able to buy and sell shares, the actual pay-in/pay-out and clearing process of shares will not take place. This is because April 1 is the annual closing day of accounts for banks.

Talking about the commodities market, NCDEX will remain closed for the entire day on March 31. On MCX, the morning session—which usually runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm—will remain closed. In the evening session, trading will be available from 5:00 PM to 11:55 PM. This week there is a holiday for the entire market on March 31, a settlement holiday on April 1 (Wednesday), and a holiday for Good Friday on April 3.

What is the update about banks?
All banks that facilitate government transactions will remain open on March 31 on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. On this day, banking operations will continue as it is the last day of the financial year. According to the RBI, this arrangement was made at the request of the central government to ensure that all payment-related transactions relating to the financial year 2025-26 can be completed on its last day, March 31. However, banks will not provide services to the general public or conduct direct transactions with customers on this special day. On this day, banking facilities will be available through digital and self-service platforms.

What is the update regarding LIC branches?
If you have not deposited your LIC premium yet, then this news is for you. Policyholders across the country can pay their outstanding premiums on this day. LIC has decided that, since it is the last day of the financial year, its branches will remain open on Mahavir Jayanti also. Work in the branches will continue throughout the day as per normal government working hours. It was clarified in a statement that this arrangement has been implemented in accordance with the advisory issued by IRDAI on March 25, 2026.
