New Delhi, April 25 (IANS). Census of India 2027 will be the country’s first completely ‘digital census’. In this, data will be collected through mobile, which will provide accurate and detailed information and will help in making better policy. This information was given in an official fact-sheet on Saturday.
The official statement said that this census will have many new features, such as near-real-time monitoring through the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, option to self-fill information and extensive use of geo-referenced areas.
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs in its meeting held on April 30, 2025 decided to include caste enumeration in Census 2027. Earlier, till the 2011 census, only Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) were systematically counted.
A budget of Rs 11,718.24 crore has been fixed for this entire process and strong arrangements have been made for data security.
Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases, so that data can be collected in a systematic and comprehensive manner across the country.
According to the government, with the help of secure data centers and large workforce, this census will provide reliable information, which will make it easier to make targeted and inclusive policies.
The statement further said that the census helps in accurately understanding population trends and can lead to better planning in sectors like food, water, energy and infrastructure. It also provides accurate information at the local level, so that government schemes can be delivered to the right place.
This will be the eighth census of the country after independence, which will give more updated and detailed information than before. This will make it easier to plan according to changing social and economic conditions.
Census is the process of collecting, compiling, analyzing and disseminating demographic, social, cultural and economic data related to all individuals in a country or a specific region. The vast store of information collected through census makes it the richest source of data for planners, administrators, researchers and other data users. The census serves as an important basis for governance, enabling evidence-based decision making in the political, social and economic spheres.
This will be the world’s largest census and with digital technology, strong data security and simple processes, it will further strengthen data-based policy making.
