Will Vodafone Idea get back on track? Government gave relief on loans, yet shares fell by 15%

Vodafone Idea, which was facing difficulties in India’s telecom sector for a long time, has finally got some relief, but this news has given mixed signals to investors. On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved a five-year moratorium on the company’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues of ₹87,695 crore. This means that Vodafone Idea will not have to pay AGR dues immediately, and the payment will be made in installments over ten years, from FY32 to FY41. However, despite this announcement, Vodafone Idea shares saw a huge fall. The stock closed at ₹10.76 on Wednesday, which was a big blow to investors. Experts say the market reaction reflects concerns that the relief is temporary and the company will have to make larger payments in the future.

interest-free moratorium
As per the government plan, no interest will be charged during the moratorium period, which will help Vodafone Idea manage its huge debt and operational challenges. After the moratorium ends, the remaining dues will have to be paid in six to ten installments. The AGR dues will be assessed by the Department of Telecommunications keeping in mind the deduction verification guidelines and audit reports. For this purpose, the government will form a committee which will decide on the methods of management and payment of dues.

Government objectives and security
Government sources said the move is aimed at protecting the government’s 49% stake in Vodafone Idea, maintaining competition in the telecom market and protecting the interests of 200 million Vodafone Idea customers. However, AGR dues for FY18 and FY19, which have already been settled under the Supreme Court’s 2020 order, will have to be paid between FY26 and FY31, and there will be no change.

Experts’ opinion
Experts believe that this relief is a lifeline for the company and will give Vodafone Idea time to reduce its financial pressure. However, the challenge for investors and the market is that the burden of repaying the dues will remain on the company for a long time. Overall, this decision is a relief for Vodafone Idea, but from a stock market perspective, the company is still going through a tough time.
