The most emotional moment of this event is when the tricolor flag is lowered with full respect at sunset. After this, with the permission of the President, the armed forces return to their barracks (camps). This signals that the Republic Day celebrations are officially over.
When did the beating retreat start?
The story of beating retreat is centuries old. In olden times, when there were wars, the fighting would stop after sunset. At that time, drums were played to signal the troops to return. As soon as the soldiers heard this sound, they left the battlefield and returned to their camp.
