Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic and versatile voices in Indian music history, passed away on Sunday. He leaves behind a legacy that has shaped the landscape of Indian cinema and music for more than eight decades. She was 92 years old.
Dr. Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital confirmed the demise of the veteran singer. Dr. Samdani said, “Asha Bhosle breathed her last today at Breach Candy Hospital. She died due to multiple organ failure.”
He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday evening after extreme exhaustion and chest infection.
The veteran singer’s granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, had earlier released a statement on social media confirming her hospitalization and requested to maintain the family’s privacy. He had said, “My grandmother, Asha Bhosle, is hospitalized due to extreme weakness and chest infection… She is undergoing treatment and hopefully everything will be fine.”
Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle entered the world of music at an early age and rose to fame in the 1950s, becoming one of the most famous playback singers in the world. His playful, soulful and infinitely adaptable voice influenced generations of music lovers in India and abroad.
During his extraordinary career, Bhosale recorded thousands of songs in several Indian languages, and lent his voice to a variety of genres, from classical and ghazals to cabaret, pop and folk music.
Her collaborations with leading composers and filmmakers have resulted in some of the most memorable songs of Hindi cinema, making her an enduring cultural icon.
His achievements have been recognized by numerous honours, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award.
In 2011, she was recognized by Guinness World Records as the artist with the most number of recordings in music history.
Even in the last years of her life, Bhosle remained associated with music, performing occasionally and inspiring the younger generation of artists. Her influence extended far beyond playback singing, shaping musical styles and redefining the role of female singing in Indian music.
