New Delhi, March 12 (IANS). From 2020 till now (till February 28, 2026), about 7.83 crore micro, small and medium enterprises have been registered on the Udyam portal and these have generated 34.50 crore employment opportunities. This information was given by Union MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi in Parliament on Thursday.

Answering a question asked in the Lok Sabha, Manjhi said that about 1.37 lakh MSMEs were closed during this period. The Minister said that there can be many reasons for cancellation of registration of an enterprise, such as change in the owner of the company, certificate not being required, double registration, closure of the enterprise etc.

Manjhi said, “The government supports the efforts of the State/UT Governments through various schemes, programs and policy initiatives like Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, Micro and Small Enterprise Credit Guarantee Scheme, Micro and Small Enterprise Cluster Development Programme, Schemes for Improving and Accelerating MSME Performance, SRI Fund, Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana and MSME Champions Scheme etc.”

To provide credit, an emergency credit guarantee scheme of Rs 5 lakh crore was announced for businesses including MSMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The scheme remained operational till March 31, 2023, under which a guarantee of Rs 1.13 crore was given to MSMEs,” the minister said.

According to State Bank of India’s research report on ECLGS dated January 23, 2023, about 14.6 lakh MSME accounts were saved, of which about 98.3 per cent of the accounts were in the micro and small enterprises (MSME) categories.

Apart from this, non-tax benefits were also given for 3 years if the condition of MSMEs improved.

Notably, equity investment of Rs 50,000 crore has been made through the Self-reliant India (SRI) Fund, comprising Rs 10,000 crore by the Government of India and Rs 40,000 crore by private equity/venture capital funds.

The objective of this scheme is to provide growth capital to eligible and eligible units of MSME sector.

The MSME Ministry implements the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP), which is a credit-based subsidy program aimed at generating self-employment opportunities through the establishment of micro-enterprises in the non-agricultural sector by assisting traditional artisans and rural/urban unemployed youth.

The Minister informed that 39 per cent of the total beneficiaries of PMEGP are women and they are provided higher subsidy (35 per cent) compared to non-special category (up to 25 per cent).
