New Delhi, January 21 (IANS). There is a small gland inside the brain, whose size is the size of a pea, but it affects your entire body and mind. It is called pineal gland. It controls everything from your sleep, mood and consciousness. In Ayurveda and Yoga it has been linked to Ajna Chakra. It is the center of our intelligence, intuition and mental clarity.
The main function of the pineal gland is to produce the hormone melatonin. This hormone controls our sleep-wake clock i.e. circadian rhythm. When it’s dark, it produces more melatonin, which induces sleep. At the same time, its quantity is less during the day, due to which the body remains awake and active.
This is why problems like insomnia, fatigue or mood swings can often be the root cause of underactivity of the pineal gland.
Apart from this, the pineal gland also helps in maintaining hormonal balance. It maintains hormonal regulation throughout the body by influencing the pituitary and hypothalamus glands.
Not only this, the melatonin present in it acts as a powerful antioxidant, which protects cells from free radicals and slows down the aging process. This gland is most active in children, but with increasing age its activity gradually decreases.
Despite being small, this gland has a big impact on our lives. Sleep, mood, mental clarity and self-consciousness all depend on it. Therefore, ignoring it may prove costly for you. There are many simple ways to keep the pineal gland active. Sitting in light sunlight every morning for 5-10 minutes, doing meditation and pranayam, drinking milk with turmeric and black pepper, drinking pure water and avoiding fluoride are very beneficial for this. Also, keeping distance from blue light of mobile and laptop and sleeping at the right time also keeps it healthy.
