New Delhi, April 19 (IANS). Nowadays, the problem of weight gain has become so common that people try different methods to lose weight. Many people completely remove carbohydrates from their plate as soon as they start dieting. They think that eating bread, rice, rotis or potatoes leads to weight gain, but are carbohydrates really the enemy of weight loss?

Experts and the World Health Organization (WHO) clearly reject this myth. According to WHO, carbohydrates are not the enemy of weight loss. The problem really lies in the type and quantity of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are important in a balanced diet, but properly chosen carbs can also help in weight control.

According to experts, it is a myth that all carbohydrates increase weight, hence they should be stopped completely. This is not the correct fact. Carbohydrates are one of the main sources of energy for the body. Eliminating them completely can cause problems like fatigue, weakness and mood swings.

Experts advise to reduce refined or processed carbs like white flour, white rice, sugar, biscuits, cold drinks etc. Choose complex carbohydrates instead. Complex carbs are high in fiber, which keeps the stomach full for a long time and controls hunger.

Good carbohydrates include whole grains like wheat, barley, millet, ragi, brown rice, pulses, and beans. Eat fruits like apple, banana, orange, etc., consume vegetables and include nuts and seeds, almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, etc. in your diet.

These carbs gradually provide energy to the body, keep blood sugar stable and prove helpful in weight loss. Just reducing carbs is not enough to lose weight. A balanced diet should have the right proportion of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats. Along with this, regular exercise and good sleep are also important. It may be difficult and even unhealthy to maintain a completely carb-free diet for a long time.

Experts say that a better way is to include complex carbs in your daily diet instead of processed carbs. For example, replace white bread with whole grain bread, or replace white rice with brown rice or millets.
