New Delhi, January 17 (IANS). Asafoetida is a common and essential spice in Indian kitchen, which is used in dal, vegetables, pickles and tadka in most of the homes. Many people consider it just a medium to enhance taste and aroma, but in Ayurveda and traditional medicine, asafoetida is considered full of medicinal properties.
The Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India states that asafoetida is not a common spice but proves helpful in fighting many diseases and keeping the body healthy. Asafoetida strengthens the digestive system. It provides relief from problems like gas, indigestion, bloating, constipation and stomach pain. The compounds present in it relax the stomach muscles and help the digestive enzymes to work better. Drinking a pinch of asafoetida mixed with lukewarm water or milk relieves many stomach problems.
Asafoetida is also beneficial for the brain. It is effective in improving memory and concentration. In Ayurveda, it is used as a brain tonic, which reduces mental fatigue and stress and keeps the mind sharp. Asafoetida has blood thinning properties, which relax the blood vessels. It helps control high blood pressure and improve heart health. Regular consumption improves blood flow and reduces the risk of clotting.
Asafoetida helps in weight control by improving digestion and prevents accumulation of excess calories. Asafoetida is very effective in stomach ache, migraine or tension related headache. Its anti-inflammatory properties reduce swelling and provide relief from pain. Also, it is beneficial in cold, cough and mucus problems. It cleans the respiratory tract with anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and helps in removing phlegm. Asafoetida provides relief from skin infections, boils and skin diseases. Its anti-inflammatory properties are helpful in wound healing. Asafoetida reduces the risk of heart diseases by improving the body’s metabolism.
This small spice of Indian kitchen not only gives taste, but is also a panacea for everyday health. However, asafoetida should be consumed in limited quantities. Overdose may cause headache. Pregnant women and children should use it only after consulting a doctor.
