Dhaka, February 17 (IANS). A huge increase in the number of dengue patients in Bangladesh has been seen in a single night. On Tuesday, local media quoted health workers as saying that 14 new cases of dengue have been reported in the last 24 hours.

“As of 8 am today, 14 new cases of dengue have been reported in 24 hours,” a spokesperson for the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

“Of the 14 new cases, nine were reported in Barisal division, four in Khulna division and one in Rajshahi. All of them are hospitalised,” a statement from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

So far this year, four people have died due to dengue in Bangladesh, and 1,361 people have been infected.

Last year, dengue had killed 413 people in the country and affected 1,02,861 people. Whereas, in 2024, dengue had killed 575 people and infected 1,01,214 people.

According to the Health Department of Bangladesh, the ministry issues guidelines to prevent its spread. These contain mention of those necessary measures which will help people. It has been suggested that in case of fever or symptoms of dengue, contact a trained doctor and take medicine on his advice.

Dengue is a viral infection caused by dengue virus (DENV). It spreads to humans through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue spreads throughout the world in tropical and subtropical climates, where mosquitoes breed mostly in urban and town areas. Prevention and control of dengue depends on vector control. There is no specific treatment for dengue, however, early detection and proper medical care can reduce mortality.
