This research shows that gene therapy can significantly treat a certain form of congenital deafness—a major breakthrough that could have benefits for both children and young adults.

For this research, scientists collaborated with hospitals and universities in China to conduct a study that included 10 patients aged 1 to 24 years. In all these cases, the hearing loss was caused by mutations in the *OTOF* gene. This gene plays an important role in making a protein called ‘otoferlin’; This protein helps in transmitting sound signals from the ear to the brain. When this protein does not function properly, the ear detects sound waves, but those signals cannot effectively reach the brain.
How was this problem solved?
To solve this problem, researchers used gene therapy. In this technique a healthy gene is inserted inside the body. To do this, a working copy of the *OTOF* gene was delivered directly into the ear using a safe viral vector—specifically, an ‘adeno-associated virus’ (AAV). The procedure was accomplished through a micro-injection into a specific area at the base of the cochlea; This place is known as “round window”.
