For a long time, breast cancer was considered a disease that primarily affected older women. However, now this thinking is changing. In recent years, there has been a rise in cases among youth—especially young women. Statistics show that the incidence of breast cancer among young women is increasing every year, becoming a growing cause for concern. According to the data, breast cancer rates will increase by about 1.4 percent per year between 2012 and 2022—a figure higher than that seen in women over the age of 50. Given this context, let’s explore why breast cancer cases are on the rise among young women and what doctors consider early signs—signs that are often missed.

Reasons behind increasing cases of breast cancer in young women

excessive alcohol consumption

According to experts, one reason for the high number of breast cancer patients in this age group in India could also be the country’s large youth population. Apart from this, many lifestyle related factors also increase this risk. For example, alcohol consumption is considered a major cause, as it can disturb estrogen levels in the body and damage DNA.

rising obesity rates
Obesity and sedentary lifestyle also increase the risk of breast cancer. This is because these factors lead to problems like hormonal imbalance and inflammation, both of which are linked to the development of cancer.

genetic factors

Additionally, in some cases, genetic factors play an important role in the development of breast cancer—specifically, changes in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2. However, in most cases, breast cancer is not genetic.

environmental factors
Environmental factors—such as pollution and microplastics—are also increasingly recognized as contributing factors to breast cancer risk. However, research in this specific area is still ongoing.

Lack of screening and late diagnosis*
Experts say that no comprehensive, large-scale screening framework for breast cancer currently exists in India. Additionally, the common misconception that young women are immune from the disease often leads to delays in seeking timely medical checkups. Lack of awareness and social shyness are also considered important factors behind this problem.

Breast cancer symptoms that are often ignored

According to doctors, the initial symptoms of breast cancer are often very mild and are unnoticed by people. These symptoms include the formation of a small, painless lump in the breast, a lack of rest, skin changes, or fatigue. Additionally, unusual discharge from the nipple (which may include blood), changes in the shape or texture of the breast, and lack of consistent light relief may also be early warning signs. Due to busy lifestyle, many women ignore these symptoms, thereby delaying diagnosis of the disease.

Why is the disease difficult to detect in young women?*
Experts say that breast tissues are denser in young women, which makes it difficult to detect mild changes during examination. Additionally, symptoms are often mistaken for common problems—such as hormonal fluctuations or fibroadenomas. Additionally, social hesitation, fear and lack of awareness act as barriers to seeking timely medical advice, which can lead to further delays in diagnosis.
