Calcium is one of the most important minerals in the body. It not only helps in strengthening bones and teeth, but is also essential for the nervous system, muscle functioning and many other biological processes of the body. If calcium deficiency persists in the body for a long time, the bones start becoming weak and the risk of serious problems like osteoporosis may increase.

Calcium deficiency can increase the risk of disease

According to a study, not taking enough calcium can increase the risk of hormonal problems like primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). In this condition, the level of parathyroid hormone becomes unbalanced, due to which the body starts using more calcium stored in the bones. If timely treatment is not received, the strength of the bones may be affected. Research also found that women who took enough calcium through food and supplements had a relatively low risk of this problem.

Adopt right diet to increase calcium

Dairy products like milk, curd, cheese are major sources of calcium. Apart from this, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, sesame, beans and other green leafy vegetables also provide calcium. By including these food items in the diet in a balanced manner, the body can get adequate calcium. If a person is deficient in calcium, supplements can also be taken on the advice of a doctor.

Vitamin D and lifestyle are also important

Proper absorption of calcium in the body is possible only when adequate amount of Vitamin D is available. According to experts, regular exposure to sunlight for a limited period of time helps the body to produce Vitamin D naturally. Additionally, excessive soft drinks, excessive caffeine, and foods high in salt can affect calcium absorption. Drinking excessive amounts of coffee can also increase calcium excretion from the body.

Balanced diet and regular checkups are important

To keep bones strong for a long time, it is important to adopt a balanced diet, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle. If you experience frequent bone pain, weakness, frequent fractures or symptoms of calcium deficiency, then you should consult a doctor and get checked. With timely detection and proper treatment, the risk of problems like osteoporosis can be reduced to a great extent.
