New Delhi, 23 September (IANS). The holy time of Navratri is going on. On this occasion, devotees keep a fast for nine days and worship nine forms of mother. At such a time, there is a dilemma about fasting in the minds of people suffering from diabetes. They want to keep a fast, but somewhere they do not have any bad effect on their health, so they take back their steps.

Both Ayurveda and modern sciences consider to be safe for diabetes patients to keep fast with some important precautions.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH and Ayurvedacharyas, the body is to maintain balance with the fifth elements and if the fast is done properly, it works to remove the toxic elements of the body and relax the digestive system. Fasting in diabetes is possible only when it is considered to be the process of ‘eating correctly’ instead of ‘staying hungry’.

Do not stay on an empty stomach for a long time during the fast. When there is a deficiency of glucose in the body, weakness, dizziness, and even fainting can come. Therefore, it is important that every two to three hours eat foods with some nutritious and low glycemic index. Options like Sama’s rice, kuttu or Rajgira flour, boiled sweet potato, makhane and cheese are considered excellent because they are slowly digested and do not allow blood sugar to grow suddenly.

Along with this, drinking water is equally important. Dehydration may occur quickly in the fast, which is a danger bell for diabetes patients. In addition to water, beverages like coconut water, non-sugar lemonade, or buttermilk, keep the body refreshed as well as the lack of electrolytes.

Nowadays, frustrated and sweets are consumed during the fast, but science says that it is better to stay away from them. Instead of fry, eating boiled, roasted or slightly cracked things will not only control sugar but will not put too much weight on the stomach. Choose natural options like stevia or jaggery instead of sugar.

In Ayurveda, fast is considered a way to cleanse the body and soul, so do not forget to take your medicines on time during this time. If you are on insulin or taking a special medicine, then consult a doctor before starting the fast.
