New Delhi, January 7 (IANS). Nowadays, due to increasing pollution, complaints like irritation in respiratory tract, cough, cold, sore throat and difficulty in breathing have become common. Effective solutions to fight these problems are hidden in the simple habits of our daily routine.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, by adopting small changes the respiratory system can be strengthened and the harmful effects of pollution can be avoided.

The Ministry of AYUSH has suggested some practical and simple measures for respiratory health. The first solution is to gargle with warm salt water. This reduces throat irritation, soreness and infection. By gargling with salt mixed with lukewarm water every morning and evening, pollution particles do not settle in the throat and the respiratory tract remains clean. Another solution is to drink herbal tea of ginger, basil and black pepper. This tea increases immunity and relieves shortness of breath. Ginger reduces inflammation, basil has anti-viral properties and black pepper thins mucus. Drinking one or two cups of this tea daily provides relief from cold, cough and the effects of pollution.

The third easy way is to take steam for congestion (nasal blockage). Take a few drops of eucalyptus oil in hot water or plain water and take steam. This opens up congestion in the nose and chest, expels mucus and makes breathing easier. It is very beneficial in allergies and sinus problems caused by pollution.

The fourth important suggestion is to avoid burning garbage or incense sticks inside the house. Burning of incense sticks and garbage spreads smoke inside the house, which is more harmful than the pollution outside. This puts a burden on the lungs and can increase respiratory diseases. Keep the house ventilated and stay away from such smoke.

All these solutions are very simple and home based. By adopting these, respiratory problems caused by pollution like cough, asthma etc. can be controlled to a great extent. If the problem becomes severe then consult a doctor.
