New Delhi, November 1 (IANS). If you’ve ever heard of hallucinations, people usually think it’s just seeing or feeling things that don’t actually exist. In reality it is a little more complicated. In this, not only you can see things, but you can also experience touching, smelling or hearing them.
There can be many reasons for this happening. The most common causes are mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia. About 68-70 percent of people with this disease experience hallucinations and 52-60 percent also hear voices. Some even feel a fragrance which is not there.
In Parkinson’s disease, almost half of the patients also experience hallucinations. It is a brain related disease and usually occurs in the elderly. At the same time, due to changes in the brain in Alzheimer’s or dementia, the patient starts seeing imaginary things. Colored lights or illusions can also be seen in migraine patients.
Hallucinations can also occur in diseases like brain tumor and epilepsy. This condition may be more common during an epileptic seizure, depending on which parts of the brain are affected. Excessive alcohol consumption can also cause seeing or hearing imaginary things.
There are also different types of hallucinations. In auditory hallucination, you hear voices, in visual hallucination, things appear as real before the eyes and in olfactory hallucination, you feel the smell of something, which is not actually there. The reasons behind this could be bipolar disorder, depression, sleep disorder, brain tumor, Parkinson’s, migraine and head injury etc.
If you or someone you know is experiencing such a condition, it is very important to consult a doctor. With timely treatment, this condition can be cured to a great extent and the person can recover quickly.
