New Delhi, March 15 (IANS). Meditation is the seventh part of the Ashtanga process of yoga, which concentrates the mind and stops the tendencies of the mind. It has been a major means of attaining enlightenment, peace and samadhi in ancient Indian tradition. In today’s stressful life, the importance of meditation has increased a lot, because it improves mental and physical health.

Regular practice of meditation reduces stress, anxiety, depression and negative emotions. It increases focus, improves sleep, controls blood pressure, strengthens immunity and promotes positive emotions.

According to experts, meditation not only reduces stress but also gives new energy to the entire body and brings peace in life. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the depth. Practice is better under the guidance of a yoga guru.

Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga provides information about some tips for success in meditation.

Choose a quiet place and a fixed time: Meditate at the same place and time every day. This creates spiritual vibrations and calms the mind easily.

Maintain regularity: Practice daily. Initially start with 10-15 minutes and increase gradually. Only consistency brings deep benefits.

Chant ‘Om’ passionately: Chanting ‘Om’ concentrates the mind. This vibration calms the mind as well as the body.

Wisdom: Reduce reasoning and think: If thoughts come, don’t try to stop them. Just watch with a thoughtless witness attitude. This calms the mind. Avoid engaging your mind in anything negative.

Choose a mental symbol, deity, or flame: Focus on a symbol of your choice, such as a flame, deity, or breath. This makes concentration easier.

Keep the body stress free: Before meditation, do asanas and pranayam like Nadishodhana, Bhastrika and Bhramari. The body should be in a comfortable posture.

Don’t expect immediate results: be patient during meditation. The results come slowly, but continuous practice brings about profound changes.
