Does AC give maximum cooling only at 18 degrees Celsius? Standby mode also 'steals' electricity

New Delhi, May 30 (IANS). The scorching heat continues across the country. In many states the temperature has crossed 45 degrees Celsius. In such a situation, the number of people running coolers, fans and air conditioners (ACs) has increased. But many misconceptions are spread in the minds of people regarding AC. The most common misconception is that AC provides good cooling only when it is set at 18 degrees Celsius.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India has given important information clearing these confusions. According to the ministry, setting the AC at 24 degrees Celsius provides comfortable coolness to the room and also reduces electricity consumption significantly. By increasing the temperature by one degree, about 6 percent electricity can be saved. This means that by running it at 24 degrees instead of 18 degrees, you can save a lot on electricity bill without any inconvenience.

Proper use of AC will not only reduce electricity bills but will also help in protecting the environment. In times of climate change, small habits can bring big changes.

The ministry says, “Be cool with wisdom, not with force.” Running AC at very low temperature not only wastes more electricity but can also have adverse effects on health. Suddenly going from a hot to a cold room can cause cold and other health problems.

Another big confusion is regarding standby mode. Many people think that after switching off the TV or AC from the remote, it does not consume electricity. But in reality, even in ‘standby mode’ these devices continue to draw power. The Ministry has advised to unplug the AC and TV from the wall socket after use. This will prevent unnecessary wastage of electricity.

Energy conservation is very important in this summer season. The Ministry has appealed to the citizens to keep the temperature of AC up to 24 degrees, keep the curtains closed so that the outside heat does not come in and keep the doors and windows of the room closed. Also, keep cleaning the AC filters from time to time, so that its efficiency remains maintained.
