New Delhi, March 16 (IANS). Periods or menstruation is a normal natural process in women. If there is excessive bleeding during this period, it can become a major cause of iron deficiency in the body. In such a situation, problems like lethargy, pain, weakness and cramps may increase. Health experts recommend consuming as much iron as possible during this period.
Health experts advise women to never ignore symptoms like weakness, fatigue or dizziness during periods. This problem can be easily controlled with proper diet and medicines on time.
Every month during periods, the lining of the uterus (endometrium) breaks and comes out if pregnancy does not occur. It may come out in the form of blood for 3 to 7 days. Normally 30-80 ml of blood comes out, but in some women it exceeds 80 ml, which is called heavy menstrual bleeding. Due to excessive bleeding, iron in the body decreases rapidly, because iron is present in large quantities in the blood.
Iron deficiency can lead to blood deficiency or anemia, the symptoms of which include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, hair loss and pale face.
According to the National Health Mission, women should take special care if there is excessive bleeding during periods. For this, the most important thing is regular consumption of iron-folic acid tablets. These tablets are taken as per doctor’s advice and increase the amount of iron in the blood. Also, it is very important to take a diet rich in iron. Include spinach, beetroot, pomegranate, jaggery, pulses, kidney beans, gram, dry fruits like raisins, dates, almonds etc.
Also, Vitamin C helps in absorbing iron better in the body, so during periods, eat fruits rich in Vitamin C like lemon, orange, amla, kiwi, strawberry, guava and tomato. Taking these fruits with or in between meals increases the absorption of iron.
Women are advised to immediately consult a doctor if there is excessive bleeding during periods or excessive fatigue. Anemia can be prevented with timely treatment and proper nutrition.
