Mumbai, February 27 (IANS). In India the day starts with tea. Here tea is both a cure for fatigue and an excuse for conversation. Tea with newspaper in the morning, tea during break in office and tea with family in the evening… this habit is seen in almost every house. If you drink more tea than required, it can cause health problems. Both Ayurveda and science believe that excessive tea can disturb the balance of the body.

According to science, two to three cups of tea a day is considered sufficient for a healthy person. One cup of tea contains, on average, around thirty milligrams of caffeine. If too much tea is consumed throughout the day, the caffeine content increases. When caffeine reaches the body in excess, it has a direct impact on the brain and sleep. The person starts having problems like restlessness, nervousness and sleeplessness at night. Sometimes a slight tremor is felt in the hands and legs, which is an indication that the pressure of caffeine on the body has increased.

An element called tannin is also found in tea, which hinders the absorption of iron. If a person drinks tea immediately after eating or along with food, then the body does not get complete iron from food. If this happens for a long time, the problem of anemia may occur. This is why experts recommend that tea should always be drunk at least an hour before or after meals.

According to Ayurveda, the nature of tea is Ushna i.e. hot. Drinking too much tea increases heat in the stomach, which can cause complaints like acidity, gas and heartburn. Especially drinking tea on an empty stomach is considered most harmful. Drinking tea on an empty stomach in the morning makes the digestive fire unbalanced. Due to this, metabolism can get disturbed and one may feel heaviness or nausea throughout the day.

Tea with milk and sugar, if taken in limited quantity, does not cause any harm, but if consumed in excess, it may lead to weight gain. Sugar adds extra calories to the body and drinking tea with milk repeatedly causes the body to gain unnecessary fat. This is why people who want to lose weight or are struggling with diabetes should pay special attention to both the quantity of tea and the sugar added to it.
