New Delhi, May 15 (IANS). Nowadays children are using internet for everything from school to entertainment. As children grow up, their online time also increases. Connecting with friends, learning new things, and pursuing interests on the Internet is great, but it also comes with many risks. It is important for parents to ensure that children’s online experiences are safe and positive.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) suggests 5 simple steps that can protect children from online danger and help them lead a healthy digital life.

Set clear rules: – Talk openly with children about who they talk to online, what they share and who can see their posts. Explain to them that whatever goes online – photo, video or comment – leaves a ‘digital footprint’ forever. Teach children never to say things that are discriminatory, derogatory, or hurtful to others. If the child feels any problem, fear or discomfort online, immediately inform the parents. Also, make clear rules regarding time, place and manner of using gadgets.

Use technology for safety: Always keep your child’s phone or tablet updated. Keep privacy settings on so that unwanted people cannot see the information. Keep your webcam covered when not in use. Use Parental Controls and SafeSearch for younger children. Advise children not to tell their personal information like name, photo, address or school to anyone. Be careful when using free online resources or apps.

Spend time online with children:- Sit online with children and play games, watch videos and chat. This allows you to monitor their activities and help them avoid misinformation, fake news and false content.

Teach them how to recognize ads and stay away from negative messaging. Help them choose age-appropriate apps and games.

Set a good example yourself:- Children learn by watching their parents or elders at home. Therefore, adopt good online habits yourself. Be careful while sharing photos and videos of children. Encourage them to speak politely, respect others, and make positive comments. If the child starts hiding something online or seems upset, then talk to him openly. Give them confidence that if there is any problem then they can tell it without fear.

Let them have fun and express themselves: The Internet is a great medium for children to be creative, learn and express themselves. Promote them on such platforms where they can learn something new as per their interest. Encourage online exercise videos or playing active games. But remember that a good balance of offline sports and family time is important along with online time. With all this, parents should play an active role.

Also be aware of school digital policies and local helplines to keep children safe online. Also teach them how to report cyberbullying or inappropriate content.
