New Delhi, December 29 (IANS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned the report of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in his program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ last Sunday and said that antibiotics are now becoming ineffective on diseases like pneumonia and UTI.

He had expressed concern over the indiscriminate use of antibiotics and now Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl has appealed to the people not to consume antibiotics without doctor’s advice.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl said that in problems like pneumonia and infection, patients are treated with antibiotics, but today the situation is such that these medicines have stopped having any effect on harmful bacteria. Earlier we used to think that if we have antibiotics then every infection can be treated, but in today’s situation this is not possible and the main reason behind this is excessive and unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl told that when the use of antibiotics increases in case of infection or not, then the harmful bacteria become antibiotic resistant or in simple language, they become hostile to the medicines and start growing in the same environment and when fever or infection occurs again, the use of antibiotics on the patient starts reducing and the dose of medicine has to be increased.

He said that when the fever does not subside for several days or there are clear signs that it is a bacterial infection, then use antibiotics only on the advice of the doctor. Do not take antibiotics on your own. Its excessive use also affects the good bacteria present in the stomach and reduces the immunity. Avoid using antibiotics like paracetamol.

PM Modi had said in his program that people believe so much that just to get rid of their problem, they take any pill without any advice. This is the reason why diseases and infections are taking a toll on these antibiotics.
