Canberra, July 2 (IANS). India on Thursday gifted a consignment of generic medicines and medical supplies available under the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Project (Jan Aushadhi) to the small island nation of Nauru, located in the Micronesia region, north-east of Australia.
The Indian High Commission in Canberra wrote on social media platform
The High Commission said, “This assistance reflects our long-standing friendship and partnership with Nauru, and also reflects India’s strong commitment to the Global South, promoting affordable and good quality health services, and driving development through a partnership based on trust and mutual interests.”
India has been an important partner in the development of Nauru and India’s assistance is greatly appreciated there. In the early 1960s, India proposed to the United Nations to support Nauru’s independence, which at that time was also supported by the Soviet Union (USSR). For this reason Nauru has special respect for India.
In November last year, the High Commissioner of India had met the President of Nauru in Canberra. During this, he had said that India is fully committed to providing all possible support in the development of Nauru and increasing cooperation between the two countries in different fields.
India and Nauru also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in August 2025 to implement the ‘Cycling for a Stronger Nauru’ project.
The project titled ‘Cycling for a Stronger Nauru – Developing athletes and promoting better health through cycling’ is being implemented with grant assistance from India. This has further strengthened cooperation between India and Nauru in the health sector.
Last year, India also gifted solar energy equipment and livelihood related materials to the people of Nauru, further strengthening the development cooperation between the two countries.
“On behalf of the Government of India, Barefoot College provided hands-on training on the installation and maintenance of solar home lighting systems. This is a great example of the strong development partnership between India and Nauru,” the Indian High Commission wrote on the ‘X’.
