New Delhi, July 3 (IANS) IIT Delhi has taken an important initiative towards strengthening the medical devices and health technology sector in India. State-of-the-art CNC and Sterilization and Packaging laboratory has been started in MPragati, the national translational platform of the institute. Here, highly accurate instruments used in implants, surgery and new testing techniques will be developed for the patients.
These new facilities aim to accelerate the process of taking medical devices and diagnostic technology directly from the laboratory to hospitals and the market. With this initiative, medical implants, surgical instruments, dental equipment and critical components used in various tests can be manufactured with greater precision in the country. This will reduce dependence on foreign equipment and imported parts and Indian technology will get an opportunity to move forward.
The new CNC facility is equipped with modern machining technologies to help researchers and innovators transform their ideas into real products. This means that the model made in the laboratory will now be able to reach hospitals faster. In fact, for any medical device, not only its manufacturing is important, but it is also equally important for it to be completely safe and infection-free.
For this purpose a new sterilization and packaging laboratory has been established. Here, all the facilities like disinfecting the instruments, checking their quality, safe packaging and testing their shelf life are available at one place. Modern systems like laser welding, laser marking, batch coding and vacuum packaging are also present here. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Central Health Research Department and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research, has started this laboratory of IIT Delhi.
According to IIT, this laboratory is equipped with modern technologies like multi-axis machining, Swiss-type turning and high-speed milling. It is also capable of manufacturing both patient-specific and standardized instruments and parts. These new facilities of IIT Delhi are important not only for the researchers but also for the medtech sector of the entire country.
This will help in commercializing medical technologies developed in India, reduce dependence on imports and enable better and cheaper health technologies to reach patients faster. The laboratory also has established state-of-the-art testing infrastructure required for medical and biological research. These include many facilities like thermal cycler, real-time PCR system, trans-blot system etc.
