Indore, January 7 (IANS). There were cases of many people falling ill and several deaths due to contaminated water in Bhagirathpura area of Indore. Now the situation has improved a lot. The number of patients admitted to hospital continued to decline for the third day on Wednesday.

According to Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani, Chief Health and Medical Officer of Indore, the number of patients admitted to the hospital with symptoms of diarrhea on Wednesday came down to 54, whereas on Tuesday the number was 99. Of these, nine patients are undergoing treatment in the ICU, while 17 serious cases were reported the previous day.

Due to contaminated water of Indore Municipal Corporation in Bhagirathpura, a large number of people in the area are suffering from diarrhea and other diseases. So far, a total of 437 people have been admitted to various hospitals in the city. Of these, 381 patients have been discharged from the hospital till Wednesday.

The Municipal Corporation has identified and repaired many leakages in the Narmada water pipelines, because it was from here that the sewage (dirty water) was mixing and contaminating the water. Water samples are being taken and tested regularly.

Narmada water supply was started on Wednesday only for testing. Local residents have been instructed not to use tap water until the government makes further announcements.

Indore District Collector Shivam Verma and IMC Commissioner Kshitij Singhal tested water from Bhagirathpura, Narmada pipeline and interacted with the local people.

Collector Shivam Verma, speaking to IANS, said, “People have been instructed to keep household taps closed and not use water as the water is being tested. Adequate water is being provided from tankers, which should be boiled and filtered before drinking.”

He also informed that an amount of Rs 2 lakh each has been given to the families of 18 people killed in this tragic incident. This also includes five-month-old baby Avyan Sahu, whose mother says he died after contaminated water mixed with his milk. The list also includes nine women who were hospitalized and most of whom died during treatment.
