Chandigarh, May 19 (IANS). In a strict administrative action amid concerns over the deteriorating sex ratio in Haryana, the Haryana government on Tuesday suspended four senior medical officers with immediate effect. They are accused of poor performance and failure to effectively monitor measures to improve this important demographic aspect.
This action by Dr. Sumita Mishra, Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, is indicative of the government’s strict stance against the negligence in implementing programs aimed at curbing illegal sex determination and female foeticide and strengthening gender balance in the state.
According to the order issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, the suspended officers include Dr. Tina Anand, SMO of Community Health Center (CHC), Purkhas, Sonipat, Dr. Vijay Parmar, SMO of CHC, Radaur, Yamunanagar, Dr. Satpal, SMO of CHC, Chiri, Rohtak and Dr. Prabha, Medical Officer of CHC, Sahlang, Narnaul.
During the period of suspension, these four officers will remain attached to the Civil Surgeon offices of Rohtak, Ambala, Jhajjar and Rewari. The government has also initiated disciplinary proceedings against these officers under Rule 7 of the Haryana Civil Services Rules, 2016. The order specifically cited poor performance and failure to ensure effective monitoring and implementation of measures related to improving the sex ratio as the reason behind this strict action.
Haryana’s sex ratio stood at 895 in the first four months of this year, which is much lower than last year’s figure of 925. A huge decline has been recorded in many districts. Charkhi Dadri district had the lowest sex ratio of 769 girls per 1,000 boys, followed by Ambala at 843, Mahendragarh at 847, Gurugram at 863 and Jind at 872.
The best performing districts included Karnal, which had the highest SRB of 968 girls per 1,000 boys, followed by Faridabad and Kurukshetra, where both the districts recorded the figure of 932.
