New Delhi, May 28 (IANS). Blood donation is called Mahadaan because the blood given by one person can save the life of a needy person. Despite this, even today a large number of people avoid donating blood. The biggest reason for this is the misconceptions related to it and lack of correct information.

Experts believe that if people give up the misconceptions related to blood donation, then the problem of blood shortage in the country can be solved to a great extent. One unit of blood can help save the lives of many people. Therefore, every healthy person should come forward for voluntary blood donation from time to time.

In such a situation, the National Health Mission (NHM) appeals to the people to remove misconceptions and adopt voluntary blood donation. According to health experts, many people believe that donating blood weakens the body or affects long-term health, whereas this is a completely wrong notion. Doctors say that blood donation is a completely safe process for a healthy person. The body compensates for the lack of blood in a short time and blood donation is done only after regular health check-up.

According to NHM, any healthy person between the age of 18 to 65 years can donate blood. The level of hemoglobin in the body of a person donating blood should be at least 12.5 grams per deciliter. Along with this, it is important for blood pressure to be normal. If a person has seasonal infection, TB, cancer or any serious illness, he should not donate blood.

Experts say that before donating blood, a complete health checkup of the donor is done. This ensures whether the person donating blood is completely healthy or not. The process of donating blood takes only a few minutes and has no negative effects on the body. Men can donate blood every three months and women every four months.

Every year a large number of patients in the country require blood. It is very important for patients to get blood on time during accidents, surgeries, deliveries and critical illnesses. In such a situation, voluntary blood donation can prove to be a great help to the society.

The Health Department says that continuous campaigns are being run to make people aware. Blood donation camps are being organized in schools, colleges and various institutions so that more and more people can join this noble cause.
