New Delhi, January 31 (IANS). The solution to every problem, whether physical or mental, is hidden in Yogasana. One such asana, which keeps both body and mind healthy, is Prasarita Padahastasana or Prasarita Padottanasana, which is also known as Wide-Legged Forward Bend.
This asana, by spreading the legs and bending forward, gives deep stretch to many muscles of the body and calms the mind. According to yoga experts, regular practice increases flexibility, reduces stress and keeps the entire body healthy.
According to Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, for the extended Padahastasana practice, stand straight in Tadasana pose on a yoga mat. Join both the legs and keep the hands along the body. Inhale and spread the legs 3-4 feet (or 4-5 feet depending on your height) apart. Keep your feet parallel, heels pointing outwards and toes slightly inwards. During this, keep your hands on the waist. Keep the chest forward. Exhale and bend forward from the waist. During this, breathe in and come back slowly.
The practice of Prasarita Padahastasana provides many benefits to the body. Thighs, hips and back get a deep stretch, which increases flexibility. The spine becomes stronger and back pain is relieved. Digestion improves and constipation is cured.
Increases blood circulation in the brain and provides relief from stress and anxiety. Legs, ankles and core muscles become stronger. Besides, fatigue goes away, mind remains calm and energy increases.
Precautions are also necessary during Prasarita Padahastasana practice. People suffering from serious back injury, high or low blood pressure, glaucoma, knee/hip problems should not do yoga without expert advice. Pregnant women should also take care. This asana is more beneficial if done on an empty stomach in the morning.
