New Delhi, May 31 (IANS). World No Smoking Day is being celebrated today, i.e. on 31st May, to make people aware of the serious health risks caused by tobacco and smoking. On this occasion, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a health advisory explaining the benefits of quitting tobacco.

WHO wrote on the Your risk of heart disease can be cut in half. Help is available, quit today!”

Earlier on May 29, WHO had said in an official statement that at least 4 crore children aged 13-15 years worldwide consume tobacco products. The use of e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches is continuously increasing among the youth. The World Health Organization urges governments around the world to protect the new generation from addiction to tobacco and nicotine products.

WHO has warned that tobacco and nicotine companies are deliberately altering their products to make them more attractive, easier to use and harder to quit.

“Tobacco is killing millions of people, yet major tobacco companies are reshaping their business models to continue to profit from deadly cigarettes while aggressively promoting flavored e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches and other nicotine products with the aim of getting the next generation addicted,” said Dr. Etienne Krug, Director of WHO’s Division of Health Determinants, Promotion and Prevention.
