Jaipur, May 9 (IANS) In the wake of reports of death of two women and serious illness of several other patients after cesarean delivery at Kota Medical College, the Rajasthan government has initiated comprehensive administrative action.

As a precautionary measure, the drug control department has banned the use, sale and distribution of 24 drugs and medical devices across the state until further orders.

Banned items include injections, glucose bottles, IV sets, syringes, catheters and other medical items commonly used during surgery and postpartum treatment.

Drug Controller Ajay Phatak has issued instructions to Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) and drug vendors across the state not to use or distribute those medicines and devices whose samples have been sent for laboratory testing.

The department clarified that these medicines and equipment will not be used in any government hospital or medical college until the test reports are received.

According to officials, of the 24 medicines and medical equipment that came under scrutiny, 15 were supplied by RMSCL to Kota Medical College, while the remaining nine were procured locally by the hospital administration.

Samples of all medicines and devices have been sent for laboratory testing, and their supply and use will remain suspended until the investigation is completed.

The controversy emerged after two women died after cesarean operation and several other patients developed serious health problems at Kota Medical College.

As public concern increased, the medical department ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Initial investigation found negligence on the part of doctors and nursing staff, following which disciplinary action was initiated against several officers and employees.

Dr. Shraddha Upadhyay has been removed from service in this matter. Two nursing staff members and Dr Navneet Kumar, assistant professor in the surgery department, have also been suspended. Besides this, show cause notices have been issued to the ward in-charge and other medical personnel.
