Nowadays, taking medicines without doctor’s advice has become a common habit of many people. For minor problems like mild fever, headache, cold, body ache or other minor ailments, people often buy medicines directly from the pharmacy and take them. It is also common for people to reuse the medicine already prescribed or start taking the medicine on the advice of an acquaintance. However, the actual cause of the disease and the individual’s health condition vary from person to person. Therefore, a medicine that is safe for one person may not necessarily be safe for another.

Taking medicines without proper testing and professional advice can sometimes have serious effects on the body. Taking the wrong medicine, taking the wrong dose, or taking it for longer than necessary increases the risk of health problems. Children, pregnant women, elderly people and people already suffering from any disease should take special care in this matter. Let us know which medicines should not be taken without doctor’s advice, what are the possible risks associated with them and what important things should be kept in mind while taking the medicine.

Which medicines should not be taken without doctor’s advice?

Antibiotics, steroids, pain relievers, sleeping pills, hormonal medications, and mental health medications should not be taken without consulting a doctor. The dosage of these medicines, how long they are to be taken and how much they are required, all depend on the particular disease and health condition of the person. By taking these without proper testing, the real disease may not be detected or it may have serious effects on health. Some medicines can also cause harm when taken with other medicines. It is not right to take medicine on the basis of advice from acquaintances, old prescription or information found on social media. If health problems persist, the safest way is to consult a doctor for proper testing and treatment rather than self-medicating.

What are the potential risks of taking medication without professional advice?

Taking medication without professional advice may mask the true form of the disease, which may delay detection of the real cause of the disease. Taking the wrong dose of medicine can have adverse effects on the body and in some cases can also affect the kidneys, liver or other organs of the body. Medicines can sometimes cause allergies, vomiting, dizziness, skin rashes, or other serious problems. If the problem persists, taking the medicine repeatedly without doctor’s advice may worsen the condition.

What precautions should be taken while taking the medicine?
Always take the medicine as per the dose and time prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop the entire course of medicine yourself or use someone else’s medicine. Always check the expiry date of the medicine before taking it and if any adverse effect is seen then contact the doctor immediately. Children, pregnant women, elderly people and people suffering from serious diseases should take special care and should not take this medicine without doctor’s advice.
