The parts of our body are interconnected, so sometimes symptoms of disease can appear in other parts of the body also. Some changes in the feet can be early signs of internal diseases. If these signs are understood on time, major problems can be avoided. Dr. A., Vascular Surgeon at Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru. Arun Kumar has told about some such signs in the feet which can be symptoms of some serious disease.
1. Swollen feet
If your feet, ankles or calves suddenly swell, do not take it lightly. This can be due to problems related to many parts of the body. When blood flow does not occur properly, fluid starts accumulating in the body tissues, which is called edema.
This problem can often be a sign of heart failure. When the heart is unable to pump blood properly, fluid accumulates in the legs due to gravity, causing swelling. It can also be caused by blood clots in the legs or kidney or liver diseases. If the swelling in your legs suddenly increases or symptoms like shortness of breath or chest tightness appear, consult a doctor immediately. Serious and life-threatening problems can be avoided by timely investigation.
2. Cold feet
It is common to have cold feet in winter. But if your feet remain very cold even after wearing warm clothes and covering your body well, it may be a cause for concern. This may be a sign of peripheral artery disease (PAD). In this disease, plaque accumulates in the arteries of the legs, which reduces blood flow. As a result, oxygen does not reach the feet properly. Ignoring PAD can be dangerous, as it significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Cold weather further increases this problem. In cold weather, blood vessels shrink further, slowing blood flow further.
3. Leg cramps at night
After a tiring day, when you are sleeping at night, you may suddenly feel severe pain and cramps in the calf muscles. This usually resolves within a few seconds or minutes, but if it happens repeatedly, you should not ignore it. Frequent leg cramps may be caused by dehydration, side effects of medications, or electrolyte imbalance. Poor blood circulation and kidney problems can also be the reason for this. Although leg cramps may seem common, if they occur frequently, it is important to see a doctor. The doctor may recommend tests related to nerves and blood vessels to detect any serious internal problems early.
4. Numbness or tingling in feet
Sometimes, sitting or lying in one position for too long can cause numbness or tingling in the legs. However, if this problem persists or occurs repeatedly, do not take it lightly. A feeling of pins and needles in the feet can be a symptom of diabetic neuropathy. This happens when the nerves get damaged due to high blood sugar level for a long time. Diabetes is the most common cause of this problem. Additionally, persistent numbness in the legs may also be a sign of increased risk of heart disease, even if there is no pain. If left untreated, it increases the risk of injuries, wounds and ulcers, which may ultimately lead to amputation.
