Chennai, March 1 (IANS). Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday inaugurated a newly built multi-storey maternity and surgical block at the Institute of Social Obstetrics and Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children in Chepauk, Chennai. This will strengthen the maternal and neonatal healthcare infrastructure in the state capital.
Built at a cost of Rs 32.32 crore, this modern facility is spread over 66,658 square feet and has a ground floor and two upper floors.
The new block adds 100 beds to the hospital’s capacity and is equipped with advanced medical infrastructure aimed at improving holistic care for women and newborns.
The ground floor has a fully equipped operation theatre, a blood sample collection unit and a laboratory.
The first and second floors house the labor monitoring room, labor ward, postnatal care unit, neonatal care section and isolation wards for infectious diseases.
The building also houses state-of-the-art operation theatre, laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgical facility, post-operative care unit, continuous monitoring system and specialized anesthesia and pain management services.
After inaugurating the facility, Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected the advanced operation theater and maternity treatment unit set up in the additional block.
Officials briefed them about the upgraded infrastructure designed to improve patient safety, reduce complications and improve the health of mother and child.
This increase has been made in view of the heavy burden of patients in the hospital.
In 2025 alone, the institution recorded 1,70,731 outpatient visits and 1,32,886 inpatient admissions, reflecting its significant role as one of the largest government maternity hospitals in the state. In the same year, the hospital performed 6,265 normal deliveries and 2,730 cesarean (LSCS) procedures. It also performed 4,323 major surgeries, 8,418 minor surgeries and 1,200 family welfare surgeries, showing the large range of services offered.
On the occasion of inauguration, Health and Family Welfare Minister Hon. Subramaniam, MP Dayanidhi Maran and Additional Chief Secretary of Health and Family Welfare P. Senthil Kumar were present. Health officials said the new block will significantly expand the hospital’s capacity to provide high-quality maternal and neonatal care, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s public health system and its focus on providing accessible and affordable healthcare for women and children.
