New Delhi, November 21 (IANS). In Ayurveda, additive medicines are those herbs or substances which increase the potency and effect of another medicine or drug. These themselves work in small quantities, but double the effect of the main drug by delivering it rapidly to the body tissues.
The most famous additive is black pepper. It increases the absorption of medicines manifold. Apart from this, Pippali enhances the effect of medicines related to lungs and digestion, Ginger improves digestion and blood circulation and makes the medicines easily reach the body. Honey makes medicines for skin, throat, lungs and heart more effective and is quickly absorbed into the blood. At the same time, ghee works to take the medicines related to intelligence, memory and nervous system deeper.
Trikut (black pepper, pippali, dry ginger) is a combined yogavahi formula, which increases the digestive fire and delivers the medicines quickly into the blood. Apart from this, garlic spreads the medicines throughout the body by increasing blood flow, sesame oil makes the medicines absorbed into the muscles and skin when used externally and Yashtimadhu increases the effect of cough-related medicines. The mixture of cow’s ghee and honey also speeds up the absorption of many medicines and gradually transports the metals to the body.
Yogavahi medicines first increase absorption. Many formulations keep the intestinal wall open for a short period of time, allowing the medicine to be absorbed more easily. Second, they slow down metabolism, so that the drug does not break down quickly and works for a longer period of time. Third, they deliver the drug to the target organ. Fourth, they increase digestive fire, which makes the medicine work better and fifth, honey and ghee accelerate cellular absorption and easily deliver the medicine to the cells.
However, before using any Ayurvedic herb, it is important to consult a qualified Ayurvedacharya, otherwise it may cause harm instead of benefit.
