Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday expressed confidence that the BJP-led NDA will win 90 to 100 seats in the May 9 assembly elections. Sharma also hit back at Rahul Gandhi over his attack on the BJP-led government. “He is a lunatic. A mad person can say whatever he wants. He is a registered ‘madman’,” Sarma said.

When asked how many seats the BJP-led NDA will win in the state, he said “90 to 100” seats. Asked about Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s promise to implement UCC in Assam if the BJP-led NDA wins the elections, Sarma said a lot will be implemented. “UCC. Immigration Impact Act. Bill against Love Jihad,” Sarma told ANI.

Sharma held a road show with BJP workers and supporters in Jorhat, in which he enthusiastically waved the party flag. He also targeted Gaurav Gogoi and claimed that the Congress leader will not win his seat and even if he wins, he will “run away from the MLA seat.”

Earlier, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had also expressed confidence in the victory of the BJP-led government in the Assam elections. He said, “We are winning about 100 seats in Assam with our alliance.” He further said, “We have made it clear from the beginning that we will not allow illegal infiltrators to settle on the land of Assam under any circumstances. The BJP government is continuously taking action against them and will continue to do so in the future also…” He further said, “We have made it clear from the beginning that we will not allow illegal infiltrators to settle on the land of Assam under any circumstances. The BJP government is continuously taking action against them and will continue to do so in future also…” He said in his election campaign in Assam earlier this month. During, Rahul Gandhi had termed Himanta Biswa Sarma as “the most corrupt Chief Minister of the country”. Gandhi had also said that Sharma “will not be forgiven, action will be taken against him”.

Gandhi had also said that Sharma “will not be forgiven, action will be taken against him”. “Whatever he says, he says out of fear. He knows that the Congress will not spare him. His self-respect will be shattered the moment the government falls,” the Congress leader had alleged.

Earlier in the day, Gaurav Gogoi had said there was a “wave of change” in Assam, and added that people were eager to end ten years of “oppression” and “corrupt administration” under the BJP-led government. “They have endured oppression for ten years. They have endured corrupt administration for ten years. Now the people of Assam want independence, and that is why they have faith in our Congress-led alliance,” he said.

The NDA, comprising the BJP, Assam Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, aims to retain power in the northeastern state, which has 126 assembly seats. The Congress is challenging the BJP-led alliance with an alliance of six parties, including Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and All Party Hill Leaders Conference. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
