Assam government to introduce bill on love jihad and polygamy in next assembly session

The BJP-led Assam government is set to introduce several new important bills in the upcoming session of the Assam Assembly, including a bill to ban polygamy and ‘love jihad’, a bill to preserve the sessions. The upcoming session of the Assam Assembly will be held in November.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said, “The next assembly session will be historic as many important bills will be introduced, including a bill to ban polygamy and love jihad, a bill to preserve our tea gardens, a bill to provide land rights to our tea garden workers.”

CM Biswa Sarma said, “In the upcoming session of the Assam Assembly, we will bring some new bills, including bills against love jihad, polygamy and protection of session. Through discussion on land rights of tea garden workers and many other bills will come in the assembly session.”

Earlier, the Assam Cabinet had approved the “Assam Satras Conservation and Development Board Bill, 2025”, which will be a statutory body to ensure the protection, conservation, management, maintenance and sustainable development of the Satras and their lands. There are Sattra Vaishnava monasteries in Assam that are important centers for religious, cultural and spiritual life, and the Vaishnava Sattra culture began in the 16th century. Earlier, the Assam government had established the Satras and It was decided to set up a Sessions Commission with quasi-judicial powers for the protection of their lands.

The decision was taken during the State Cabinet meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan, Guwahati on October 16 under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Biswa Sarma. The State Cabinet has approved the “Assamese Conservation and Development Commission Bill, 2025” to protect sacred heritage institutions, promote their cultural and economic potential and ensure their legacy for future generations through a blend of modern governance and reverence for tradition. Under the Bill, a A commission will be established that will protect Satria lands from encroachment and disputes through transparent governance, as well as promote sustainable economic development through heritage tourism and Satria arts.

Chief Minister Biswa Sarma said, “It will further safeguard the Vaishnava heritage through a digital repository for land, artefacts and manuscripts, and ensure global access and preservation.”

 

A retired judge of the High Court appointed by the State Government will be the Chairman of the Commission. Also, the Director of Land Acquisition, Acquisition and Reforms of Assam (ex-officio) will be the Member Secretary, two members – representatives of sessional bodies nominated by the State Government, and one member (of the rank of Secretary) will be a retired civil servant experienced in land administration.
