While visiting the Swahid Memorial area, Chief Minister Sarma told reporters, “On November 25, we will bring an anti-polygamy bill in the Assam Assembly. Earlier on November 9, the Assam Cabinet had approved the “Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025”, which aims to restrict and end the practices of polygamy and polygyny in the state except in the sixth scheduled areas.
Chief Minister Sarma announced that the bill will be introduced in the Assam Assembly session on November 25 for passing. “Polygamy is prohibited in respect of a person who will not marry if he has a living spouse or is not legally separated from the other spouse by following legal procedure or is a party to a marriage which has not yet been dissolved or annulled by an order of divorce,” Assam Chief Minister said at a press conference held at Lok Seva Bhawan in Guwahati. Assam Prohibits Polygamy The Bill, 2025, seeks to provide compensation to the aggrieved women as they have to endure immense pain and hardship due to polygamy. The Bill has been drafted with the stated objective of streamlining the society to save it from the scourge of such practices.
He further said that under the Bill, there will be a provision of rigorous imprisonment of 7 years for persons marrying for the second or more time.
