Due to the Middle East war in Bangladesh, a major crisis of fuel and electricity has arisen. The government has taken strict steps to save electricity and has directed all government employees to keep non-essential lights and ACs switched off. The situation is so serious that schools and colleges have already been closed in the country and decorative lighting has also been banned. This country with a population of 17 crores is completely dependent on imports for its energy needs.

🚨: Oil Price Today: Crude oil crosses 116 dollars, fear of ground war between Iran and America creates panic in the market.

What new rules has the government implemented to save electricity?

The administration has issued a new order under which only essential electrical equipment can be used in government offices. It has been asked to keep the temperature of air conditioning (AC) at 25 degrees Celsius or above so that power consumption can be reduced. Apart from this, it has been advised not to light electric bulbs in offices if natural light is sufficient. The use of decorative lights at social events, religious places and community centers has already been completely banned.

How is India helping Bangladesh amid fuel crisis?

Due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, oil prices have increased significantly in the global market. Bangladesh is facing an additional economic burden of about 760 to 830 million dollars every month. In this difficult time, India has started supplying diesel to Bangladesh. Recently, India sent an additional 5,000 tonnes of diesel, taking the total recent supply to 15,000 tonnes. According to officials, 40,000 tonnes of diesel is expected to arrive from India in the month of April.

Major events and figures related to energy crisis in Bangladesh

Date Main update or decision 30 March 2026 Official order to use less lights and AC in government offices. 29 March 2026 Study warns of ‘fiscal emergency’ due to rising fuel prices. 10 March 2026 Decorative lighting banned in social and religious events. 9 March 2026 Eid holidays declared early in schools and universities to save electricity. March 4, 2026: Announcement of huge cut in gas supply for fertilizer factories and power plants.

Due to the war in the Middle East, the obstruction in the Strait of Hormuz has also adversely affected the gas supply from Qatar and UAE. To deal with this crisis, Bangladesh is now demanding a loan of about 2 billion dollars from international organizations so that it can meet its energy needs.
