The Government of India has officially started the e-Passport service. This new high-tech passport is equipped with an RFID chip and antenna in place of the traditional passport, which will enable the passenger identification and security process to be completed digitally.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this facility is currently launched in some major cities and will be available at Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) across the country by the end of 2025.
📘 What is e-passport
An e-passport is similar to an ordinary passport booklet, but has an electronic chip (RFID) embedded in its back cover.
In this, the passenger’s photo, fingerprint and personal information are stored securely in encrypted form.
This chip is secured with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology, making identity forgery almost impossible.
🌍 New arrangement for Indians living in UAE
Indians living in Dubai and other Gulf countries are now receiving third generation e-passports, which will have this RFID chip.
From October 28, 2025, new applications will be accepted only in the form of e-passport.
Old passports will remain valid till their expiry date, replacement is not necessary.
No additional fees or biometric processing required.
Embassies and Consulates now have the capacity to process approximately 1,600 passports daily.
