Taking a historic step towards the infrastructure and environmental protection of Delhi, the foundation stone of ‘Atal Garden’ has been laid in Uttam Nagar. This project, being developed in a huge area of 50 acres on the banks of Najafgarh drain, is going to become the largest green belt of the city. On December 27, 2025, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stone of this ambitious project. This initiative is not limited to just creating a park, but is an important part of the revitalization of the Najafgarh Drain, which aims to reduce pollution and increase the connectivity of the area. This project, which is taking shape on the land of Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department near Vipin Garden, will prove to be a new gift for the people of Delhi, where a main park will be constructed on 21 acres.

This park will become a center of modern facilities and entertainment with a 12 feet tall grand statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The outline of the project has been prepared in a very grand manner. Out of the total 50 acres, the main ‘Atal Park’ will be developed in 21 acres. The main attraction of this park will be the 12 feet high statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Apart from this, there will be facilities like attractive fountains, colorful water fountains and cricket nets for the visitors. An amphitheater with a capacity of 200 seats will be built for cultural programs and public events. Keeping in mind the fitness and entertainment of the people, open gym, food court, walking track and special play area for children will be developed. Benches and other facilities will also be provided at various places for the comfort of senior citizens.

More than 10 thousand saplings will be planted to increase greenery, special emphasis will be on conservation of local species.

In this project, special attention has been given to tree plantation to deal with pollution and improve the climate of Delhi. Under the scheme, more than 10,000 trees will be planted across the campus. These include trees with shady and medicinal properties like Mahua, Neem, Kachnar, Amaltas, Shisham, Gulmohar and Mango. Additionally, saplings of indigenous species like Kamini and Curry Patta will also be prominently planted to strengthen the local ecosystem. This green belt will not only enhance the beauty of the area but will also become a great source of oxygen.

Target to complete the project in six months, special facilities will be ready for Chhath fasts and senior citizens in the next four months.

The administration has prepared a blueprint to complete this project in a time bound manner. The total riverfront project cost is estimated at Rs 9.5 crore, while Rs 29.94 lakh has been spent so far on the design and detailed project report (DPR). The construction work is targeted to be completed in the next 6 months. Specifically, Chhath ghats, reservoirs, walkways, green areas, sports complexes and public facilities will be ready within the next 4 months so that people can avail the benefits of the same as soon as possible. Also, construction of roads on both sides of Najafgarh drain, development of central verge under the metro corridor and desilting work is also going on war footing, of which 66% has been completed so far.

Riverfront will be developed on the lines of Singapore, along with freedom from pollution, local residents will get relief from jams and waterlogging.

This project will prove to be a game-changer for Delhi. Its objective is to give Delhi a world-class riverfront like Singapore. Rejuvenation of the largest drain falling into Yamuna will not only eliminate dirt and bad smell, but will also solve the problem of waterlogging. Along with this, the Rs 600 crore road project will strengthen local connectivity. Residents of Uttam Nagar, Dwarka Mod and Vipin Garden will find a great community center and outing spot. The project will secure 50 acres of government land that has been encroached upon for years and will ensure a safe and green environment for the city residents.
