Violent clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress and supporters of Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) founder Humayun Kabir over the crude bomb incident on Thursday.

Supporters used sticks to attack each other, threw stones and damaged vehicles parked on the roadside.

Security forces soon took control of the situation and dispersed the supporters involved in the violence.

This incident has come to light after Humayun Kabir’s visit to Nauda area today, where crude bombs were thrown late on Wednesday night ahead of the first phase of voting in West Bengal.

Humayun Kabir organized a protest in which he alleged that a police officer lathicharged his supporters at night and demanded the officer’s removal.

He also urged the Election Commission to take action against the TMC workers involved in today’s clash.

Humayun Kabir said, “We want the Nauda police officer who lathi-charged my supporters last night. This should not happen. The Election Commission should take action against him…a new officer should be posted there. Till then I will keep protesting here. My people are being beaten and threatened. This should not happen. The Election Commission should take action against the TMC workers who did all this.”

Election Commission officials said that the Election CommissionNauda Has sought a report from DM/DEO regarding the tension between Humayun Kabir and TMC workers.

Security personnel were deployed to control the situation as tension escalated between party workers and police during the voting process. Police had to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse some sections of the crowd, but they denied that the situation was out of control.

An eyewitness to the crude bomb throwing incident said, “This incident probably happened between 8:00 and 8:30 pm. A woman was injured in this incident. We cannot say who all were involved in this. We are very scared; such an incident can happen at any moment. The leaders had come here, so it is possible that because of this some problem may arise again.”

West Bengal is witnessing a high-voltage contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress, which is trying to come to power for the fourth consecutive time, and the BJP, which is aiming to form the government after a stellar performance in the last elections.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is aiming to come to power for the fourth consecutive term, while the BJP, which had won 77 seats in the last elections, is making a fresh effort to form the government in the state.

In West Bengal, parties are contesting against each other for 294 assembly seats. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the first phase includes 152 assembly constituencies, while the second phase includes 142 seats. A total of 1,478 candidates are in the fray in this phase.

Counting of votes is to take place on May 4.
